How Did Your Super Perform in 2019?

Superannuation returns hit a six-year high in 2019, mainly driven by international and domestic shares, which both performed strongly during the last year. Read on to find out how your super performed in 2019.

We delivered strong returns for our members in 2019

Christian Super members in our default My Ethical Super option received a 12.51% return in 2019, bringing our 10 year returns to 6.98%, exceeding the option’s investment objective of an average annual return of inflation plus 3% over 10 year periods.

Christian Super pension members in our Pension Ethical Balanced Growth option received a 14.54% return in 2019, bringing our 10 year returns to 7.6%, exceeding the option’s investment objective of an average annual return of inflation plus 3% over 10 year periods.

While it’s great to celebrate years of particularly strong investment returns, we continue to focus on delivering steady growth over the long term. We’re delighted to be able to say that all of Christian Super’s investment options have achieved their objectives across all timeframes. The returns for all of our investment options are available here.

Looking ahead

While 2019 has been a strong year for the superannuation industry and for Christian Super, it’s important to remember that superannuation is a marathon, not a sprint. Investment returns will vary from year to year depending on economic conditions and share market performance, but regular contributions plus the power of compounding investment returns will result in steady growth over the long term.

We are anticipating that returns in 2020 will not be as strong as they were in 2019. Interest rates remain at or near historic lows. Markets remain volatile and reactive to geopolitical and global trade news in particular.

We will continue to invest wisely and ethically, responding to changing market conditions as required, in order to deliver steady growth over the long term so that our members are able to have a purposeful retirement.
