Financial Planning

Gym memberships peak during January as we set New Year resolutions to get fit. But by February each year the crowds who tussled for the running machine or queued to pump some iron on the bench press during January vanish…. another lot of New Year resolutions go by the wayside before summer has even ended.

What’s the alternative? Writing down specific, prayerfully considered, goals and objectives for the year to come and the steps you need to take to achieve these outcomes.

You may have heard of the Harvard Business School study illustrating the benefits of writing down goals – it is pretty convincing. Take heed and make sure you write down your goals and you will significantly increase the probability of achieving them. Put a specific time frame on the goal and make them measureable. If you are a couple you should agree on these goals together.

For example, one of your goals might be to get your finances in order, which could include:

  • Paying off all consumer debt;
  • Consolidating your superannuation funds into a single account; and
  • Increasing your insurance cover.

Your written goal could look something like: By March 2014 I will have paid off all of my $10,000 consumer debt, rolled over my three superannuation funds into a single fund and have in place adequate insurance to provide for my family needs.

This goal sets a timeframe, a dollar amount and is measurable. You could even create more motivation to achieve the goal by stating how it will benefit you.

  • I will no longer carry the burden of consumer debt, the associated feeling of being out of control and the financial burden of high interest.
  • I will be confident that my loved ones will be provided for in the event of death, disability or illness.
  • I will have less administration to deal with by having a single fund and pay fewer fees at the same time.
  • It will enable me to focus on what I want to achieve in life rather than worrying about finances.
