How do you believe your skills can be used as a director of Christian Super if you are elected?

My wife, son and I are members of Christian Super and all our superannuation is with Christian Super. I have over 25 years of ‘financial’ experience and currently work outside the Christian sector which gives me an independent perspective. I have now been involved as a Trustee of Christian Super for nearly 9 years and have gained a deepening appreciation of the Mission which is Christian Super. For the majority of members, the prospect of financially planning their future and retirement is a very daunting task. I pray and work toward working effectively with a Christ centred Board of Trustees to deliver a Christ honouring outcome to our members.

What experience do you bring to the role of Trustee Director?

I have been involved in Banking and finance for over 25 years. In corporate sales, relationship, credit risk and assurance functions. I was also in executive management of a Christian school for over 5 years. Currently I am National Head of Credit Assurance with an international bank, which is over 100 years old, with a strong ethical character. I attend regular professional development updates with the Risk Management Association (RMA), Association of Fund Administrators (ASFA), Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST), Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA). I have also completed the AICD Company Directors course. Of greatest relevance is that I am actively involved in my Church and close to the main constituents of our fund. I have been involved in Children’s Ministry, Young Adults, Church Finance and Leadership at Board level at our Church. I believe Christian Super is a major mission which can expand the Kingdom as well as serve our members effectively for financial security in retirement.

Which church do you attend and how are you involved?

I have attended Gymea Baptist Church (GBC) since 1983. I was Church Secretary (Diaconate/Church Leadership Team) until end 2014, and remain a member of the Finance team and Stewards team. I have been Church Treasurer as well as a leader of the Young Adults Ministry and Sunday morning Junior Hi. My wife is musically gifted (I’m not). She is the Kids Hope coordinator, has been Book Keeper at the Church as well as doing the banking for a 10-year period. Our son completed his HSC at Inaburra School 2016 and is also a Youth Leader at GBC. We love the way the gospel is woven into school life in Christian Schools and the very relevant teaching our Ministers preach at GBC. We are not a perfect family but we try to be available.

How does Christian Super’s vision of seeing people living life with financial health and understanding resonate with you?

All we have has been given to us by God and belongs to God. God calls us to ‘dress, til and keep’ all he has given us to care for. The funds held by Christian Super are held in trust and invested for the sole benefit of members as prescribed by law. The vision is to see ‘people live with financial health and understanding’ freeing them to serve without inhibition as they are led.

What is your view on biblical investing and why it is important for Christian Super and its members?

Biblical principles underscore the Funds Ethical investing, allowing the Fund to be continuously honouring and applying Biblical principles/beliefs and living the name of the fund (Christian Super). Ethical investing is an intentional choice which increases engagement. Research has shown that ethical investment returns are equal to or better than returns for funds who are not actively engaging in ethical investing. Christian Super has been recognised as a leader in Ethical investing and particularly impact investing to create double returns (returns for members and community good). We all are called to live our beliefs. Our beliefs centre on that we are saved by faith. God calls us to have faith that living his way is the one and true way. Ethical Investing is simply engaging in this belief when assessing the funds options and directions. I believe this value proposition provides outperformance for members.
