Super investment returns in the 2020/21 financial year

Investment returns in the 2020/21 financial year were some of the highest we’ve delivered in the last decade, with the majority of our investment options delivering double-digit returns for members.

Our default My Ethical Super option delivered returns of 17.41% during the last financial year, and an average annual return of 7.95% over the last 10 year, well above its investment objective. Investment returns for our other investment options including our pension product, are available here.

Reasons for strong returns

Returns were driven by the continued recovery of growth assets from their COVID-induced slump in March 2020. Shares led the way with global equities posting a 35.5% return for the year and the ASX up 28.5%.  Solid gains were also recorded for private equity, property and infrastructure after an initial COVID setback. In contrast there was little return for fixed income and cash.

The strength in returns reflects efforts by governments and central banks around the world to support economic growth by increased government spending and low interest rates. These policy measures, along with economic re-opening driven by the COVID vaccine roll out, helped propel share markets to new record highs.

Looking forward

Looking ahead we expect lower returns given current high valuations, and some moderation in economic growth following the current bounce back. However, continued stimulus by governments is likely to keep the Australian and global economies growing at a solid pace as lower unemployment is top of the to do list of policy makers.

Our team is continually refining our investment strategy and approach to ensure risk and growth are well balanced for market conditions. Our investment strategy has always been focused on delivering healthy returns for our members over the long term. We do this by carefully selecting investments that are aligned with Christian beliefs and also deliver strong, risk-adjusted returns for our members.
